"Closed Eyes was such an easy read and I mean that in the best possible way. As a survivor of family violence, and someone who spent years caught in the cycle and repeating harmful patterns, this book could have been life-changing for me earlier in life. What stood out wasn’t just the story itself, but the methodology of care, support, and service delivery behind it. I’m not sure whether my own experience came down to the time period, the state I was in, or broader service limitations, but for me, my voice was only truly heard once I had already made the decision to leave. Even then, support often felt like an emergency payment and a “best of luck.” Melissa’s work in Book One is a true testament not only to her dedication to this industry, but to a vision of care that should be explored, developed, and implemented by organisations across Australia. Too often, funding is seen as the biggest barrier but successful service delivery design is just as critical. This story lays a foundation that family violence services, community organisations, and government sectors should all be paying attention to. I’m genuinely looking forward to continuing this reading journey. As someone working within the community services sector, I will absolutely be advocating wherever possible for Melissa’s work to be reviewed by victims, survivors, and stakeholders alike.
